Schoolboy caned by teacher
A 12-year old schoolboy severely injured when caned by his class teacher 13 days ago, has now been admitted to the local health complex and undergone a surgery after his condition deteriorated yesterday.
Toriqul Islam is a student of Class-V at Kewa Government Primary School in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari district.
Sources in Khoksa upazila health complex in the district confirmed the matter in the afternoon.
Shukur Ali, the boy's father, said Nasir Uddin – a teacher at school – severely beat his son with a cane when he failed to answer a question in class on August 22.
When Ali learnt about this matter he went to the school to confront the headmaster about how his son was beaten. Then headmaster Lutfar Rahman and Nasir Uddin gave Ali some money for the boy's treatment and asked him not to make the matter public.
Ali took his son to the local village quack Mono Ranjan Gosai who 'treated' Toriqul.
On Sunday night, Toriqul's condition deteriorated further when he began experiencing excessive pain on his shoulders where he was beaten. The village doctor then asked Ali to take his son to the hospital.
Ashraful Islam, the physician treating Toriqul at the Khoksa upazila health complex, said, “Blood circulation around the affected spot has stopped which is causing the pain.”
He said a surgery was required.
Meanwhile, Nasir Uddin said he had dealt only one strike with the cane on the boy.
“I never thought something like this would happen from a single strike,” he told this correspondent over phone.
Sujan Ali, Assistant Primary Education Officer of Pangsha upazila said he will visit the student on Wednesday and take steps as required.
