The Rajshahi University (RU) syndicate has decided to suspend Professor Mustak Ahmed based on the report of an investigation committee formed against him over multiple allegations, including that of sexual harassment.

Professor Mustak Ahmed is the former chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) at Rajshahi University.

The decision was taken in the 537th meeting of the RU Syndicate, held on March 9.

The university syndicate took these decisions based on the report of the investigation committee formed to audit the department's income and expenditure and examine complaints brought by students during Professor Mustak Ahmed's tenure as chairman.

Earlier on September 3, 2024, students of the Department of MCJ demanded Prof Mustak's removal, accusing him of sexual harassment, financial misconduct, academic irregularities, corruption, and inciting violence during the July-August movement.

A formal complaint was submitted to the university registrar, with copies sent to the vice-chancellor and the department, in this regard.

Faculty members had unanimously backed the students' complaint.

According to the syndicate decision, Professor Mustak Ahmed's promotion will be suspended for five years from the date of his next due promotion, and he will not receive any annual increments during this period.

Additionally, he will not be allowed to participate in academic activities or hold any administrative responsibilities for the next five years. He must clear all departmental dues within 15 working days of receiving the due notice.

He will also not be allowed to work at any other institution or engage in part-time teaching, and this five-year period will not be counted as active service.
