Breaking all Boundaries
Like many schools in the country, Naziria Naymia Mahmudia Madrasa, is housed inside an old building, with cracked wall-paint and under construction structures in Chandgao, an old area of Chittagong. However, this Alia madrasa is different from any other madrasas in terms of academic curriculum, extra-curricular activities, and not to mention, a spirited atmosphere. Last year the madrasa was selected as the only Microsoft Mentor School and Microsoft Innovative School in Bangladesh for their developed computer programme for women and madrasa students. These would not have been possible without Hafez Allama MD Mohiul Hoque, the principal of this madrasa.
“Extra curricular activities were always something the students were interested in,” says MD Mohiul Haque. “They are always eager to learn more, so I started to give priority to the extra curricular activities, as well as academic curriculum.”
The madrasa is also a selected entity for Connecting Classrooms; an international program conducted by the British Council. As an ambassador of this programme, Hafez Allama MD Mohiul Hoque has been leading 25 government and non government schools in Chittagong.
Naziria Naymia Mahmudia Madrasa is known for their students' involvement in various activities. Other then the government syllabus the madrasa also focuses on global education, technical education, health care, vaccination, mother-child care, children rights, AIDS, anti trafficking awareness program etc.
A successful project of theirs was the women empowerment programme through computer training and teaching courses on women issues. This project was sponsored by the US embassy and American Centre.
“There is a social stigma that madrasa students are not exposed to the world. But I think my students proved the idea to be wrong . They are the most talented kids I've ever seen and I am honoured to be a part of their lives,” says Md Mohiul Haque
The school was established by the Hazratul Allama Allhajj Moulana Mahmudul Hoque, father of the current principal back in 1983. To date, the madrasa has proved to be an establishment promoting the building of all rounded young personalities.
