Farmers Bank ex-audit chief denied bail
The High Court (HC) today refused to grant bail to Mahbubul Haque Chisty, former chairman of Farmers Bank audit committee, in a corruption case filed on charge of misappropriating Tk 160 crore of the bank.
The court passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed earlier by Chisty.
The bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman, however, asked Chisty to move his bail petition on a new ground after its vacation, Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told The Daily Star.
Both the Appellate and HC Divisions of the Supreme Court will go for an annual vacation tomorrow and will reopen on October 13.
DAG Manik also said Mahbubul Haque Chisty cannot walk out of jail following the HC order.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the graft case with Gulshan Police Station on April 10 against Chisty on charge of misappropriating Tk 159.95 core from the then Farmers Bank through transfer, handover and laundering.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam appeared for the government and Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan argued for the ACC while Advocate Dr Shahdeen Malik stood for Chisty.
The anti-graft body arrested Chisty from Dhaka's Segunbagicha area on April 10 last year.
