Graft trial against Nur Hossain to continue
The High Court today scrapped a lower court verdict that exonerated Nur Hossain, a death-row convict in Narayanganj seven-murder case, from a corruption case.
The HC also directed the lower court to finish the trial of the corruption case against Nur Hossain in next six months.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam came up with the order after hearing a revision petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Narayanganj Police Station against Nur Hossain on November 28, 2002 for misappropriating Tk five lakh of the land development tax when he was the chairman of Naraynganj’s Siddhirganj union parishad in 1997.
The ACC submitted the charge sheet of the case to the lower court on July 19, 2011. But Narayanganj special judges court on January 30, 2013 exonerated Nur from the case on the ground that filing of the case was delayed.
The ACC on April 23, 2015 filed a revision petition with the HC challenging the lower court exemption order.
The HC on June 28, 2015, issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain why the exemption order of the lower court could not be scrapped.
After holding hearing of the rule, the HC today delivered the verdict.
Advocate Md Shafikul Islam appeared for the ACC and Deputy Attorney General AKM Aminuddin Manik represented the state.
