BB to launch debit card that can be used in India
The central bank is going to launch a the country's own debit card by August to allow holders to make payments at home as well as in India, said Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder today.
Under the current practices, travellers have to buy US dollars before travelling to India and convert them into the rupees when they are in the neighbouring country.
As a result, they face an exchange rate loss twice, which could be as high as 6 per cent, the governor said.
The special debit card holders will be able to make payments in India as well as in Bangladesh, he said, adding that banks and financial institutions will issue the cards.
