Customs operations resume at Ctg port after 2-day shutdown

Import and export activities at the Chattogram Custom House resumed this morning, bringing relief to businesses after a two-day complete suspension at the country's largest seaport.

"Operations have resumed, including both import and export activities," Chattogram Custom House Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Islam told The Daily Star.

The shutdown, enforced by customs officials and staff under the banner of the NBR Reform Unity Council, had brought activities at all customs houses and stations across the country to a standstill since Saturday morning.

Earlier, the government formed a five-member committee to resolve the issue and declared all categories of positions under NBR as essential services.

It also urged protesting officials to return to work, warning that stern action would be taken in the interest of protecting public and economy if they failed to comply.

Following the announcement, agitating customs officials decided to return to work last evening.

According to port sources, no export clearance was issued at Chattogram Port on Saturday due to the suspension of customs operations. Around 3,500 export containers remained stuck at the port in just one day, causing significant disruption to the country's trade.
