DSE rises despite BSEC stalemate, work stoppage

Despite an ongoing stalemate at the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), where officials are observing a work stoppage, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) opened on an upward trend today.
The DSEX, the benchmark index of the DSE, rose by 34 points, or 0.62 percent, reaching 5,231 by 10:50am.
Following yesterday's daylong protest demanding the resignation of the BSEC chairman and commissioners, officials arrived at their office at the usual time but refrained from resuming duties.
Instead, they convened at the BSEC multipurpose hall to discuss their next course of action.
Officials confirmed that while no army personnel were present at the BSEC premises today, a few police officers remained stationed at the front gate.
BSEC Chairman Khondoker Rashed Maqsood and the other three commissioners did not report to the office today. Instead, they visited the Ministry of Finance to brief officials on yesterday's events.
Yesterday, the protesters confined the chairman and three commissioners to the BSEC meeting room for around four hours before army personnel intervened to secure their release.
