Every national identity (NID) cardholder should submit his/her tax return so that the number of taxpayers rises, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said today.
The minister said he had taken effort during the tenure of late Finance Minister AMA Muhith to make tax return submission mandatory for all NID cardholders.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. Muhith wanted to implement it, but could not do it for bureaucratic tangles, Momen said.
The foreign minister made the comments at a programme titled "Remembering Abul Maal Abdul Muhith" organised by the Economic Reporters' Forum (ERF) at the ERF office in Dhaka.
Former Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir and Former Senior Finance Secretary Mahbub Ahmed were also present.
