Govt hopeful about receiving two IMF tranches in June

Bangladesh is optimistic about receiving the fourth and fifth instalments of the IMF loan together in June, as the government is working to meet the lender's conditions, said Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed today.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with an IMF delegation in Dhaka, he said the fund has identified sluggish revenue generation as a key concern.
"If the IMF does not release the funds, we will have to boost revenue," he added.
The adviser noted that the IMF considers Bangladesh's economy to be stable and believes it is moving in the right direction.
The visiting delegation is assessing the country's progress on reforms tied to the $4.7 billion loan programme, of which three instalments have been disbursed so far.
The delegation arrived on April 5 and is scheduled to stay until April 17, according to the Ministry of Finance.
During the visit, IMF officials will hold discussions with representatives from the Finance Division, the National Board of Revenue, Power Division, Power Development Board, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission, and the Energy and Mineral Resources Division.
The review mission will conclude with a meeting between the IMF team and the finance adviser on 17 April, followed by a press briefing.
