India today lifted the five-month-old ban on the export of onions of all varieties with effect from March 15.

"The export of all varieties of onions…has been made free without any condition of Letters of Credit and Minimum Export Price with effect from March 15, 2020," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) also said in the document.

The notification, signed by DGFT Additional Secretary Amit Yadav, came five days after a high-level group of ministers headed by Home Minister Amit Shah at a meeting took the decision. It was done in a bid to protect the interests of farmers as prices in the domestic market showed a sharp declining, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

The Indian government had banned onion exports in September and also imposed a MEP (Minimum Export Price) of USD 850 per tonne in a move to control onion prices.

Bangladesh is one of the key importers of onions from India.
