Right policies can turn US tariff challenges into opportunities: footwear exporters

The new US tariffs are unlikely to significantly disrupt Bangladesh's footwear exports, said Nasir Khan, managing director of Jennys Shoes Ltd, a leading footwear exporter.

"Although Bangladeshi products, including leather footwear, are now subject to a 37 percent tariff in the US market, there is no major reason to panic," Khan told The Daily Star over the phone today.

He noted that about 19 percent of Bangladesh's total exports go to the US, while the South Asian country imports around $2 billion worth of American goods annually.

"If we reduce import tariffs on US products, it won't have a significant impact on us. On the other hand, if the US lowers tariffs on our exports, it could open new opportunities for Bangladeshi manufacturers," he said.

Khan acknowledged that Bangladesh, particularly in the non-leather footwear segment, does rely on the US market. However, he believes this dependency is not as critical compared to other industries.

"If the US further opens its market, some countries might struggle as their domestic industries could face increased competition from American products. But for Bangladesh, this could be an advantage," he explained.

He pointed out that the key factor will be how the government navigates the evolving trade environment.

"With the right policy decisions, Bangladesh can turn this situation into an opportunity," Khan added.

Expressing optimism, he said Bangladesh's footwear exports are likely to remain strong despite recent policy changes.
