Stocks fall for second day

The benchmark index of the Dhaka stocks dropped 0.16% to 5,196.70

The stock market ended lower for the second consecutive day today, weighed down by growing concerns over trade tariffs with the United States.

The DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), dropped 8.48 points, or 0.16 percent, to 5,196.70.

The Shariah-compliant DSES index slipped 0.15 percent to 1,165.97, while the DS30, which represents blue-chip stocks, inched up 0.07 percent to 1,930.71.

Among the traded securities, 150 advanced, 191 declined, and 57 remained unchanged.

Investor sentiment appeared shaky following last week's announcement by the US government, which claimed that Bangladesh imposes an effective 74 percent tariff on American goods.

In response, the US proposed a 37 percent "discounted reciprocal tariff" on Bangladeshi exports.

Amid the developments, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will write to US President Donald Trump, while Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin will address the United States Trade Representative to restore trade ties and investor confidence.
