TCB to sell onion at Tk 50 per kg from tomorrow
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will start selling onion at Tk 50 per kg across the country from tomorrow ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.
Currently, onion is selling for Tk 60-80, a 21.74 percent increase than the previous month, according to TCB data. The price went up after India increased its onion export price by $275 per tonne last month.
TCB will also sell sugar at Tk 37 per kg and soybean oil at Tk 89 per litre through 173 trucks, a press release of the TCB said today.
Each customer will be allowed to buy 4 kg sugar, 2 kg onion and 10 litres of soybean oil, the release added.
The trucks will be stationed at 24 points in the capital, 10 in Chittagong, five each in the divisional headquarters and two each in the district headquarters, the release added.
A TCB official, seeking anonymity, told The Daily Star that the organisation is buying the onion from border markets at a rate of 62 Tk per kg through tenders.
The TCB has floated tenders for buying around 550 tonnes of onion and already signed deals for 200 tonnes, he added.
