Is VR finally worth it?
The experience of VR is hard to put into words. From the outside, it still looks like awkward flailing and nauseating confusion, but immersion truly finds a meaning once you try a headset on, because unlike the figurative parallels we have drawn between video games and immersion over the years – it feels real.
Not too long ago, entry into VR was blocked off by the ridiculous price tags of headsets and the added cost of making a desktop powerful enough to simulate VR. But that all started to change with PlayStation VR. PlayStation's proprietary VR headset costs Tk. 28,000 and if you have a PlayStation 4 already then it's a great investment considering the number of VR games that are available right now on the PlayStation 4.
And VR's found its footing on desktops as well, with the recent price cut of the Oculus Rift and the revised minimum specs only being an Nvidia GTX 970 and 8GB RAM. And Oculus's next VR headset, codename Rift S is looking like it's going to be an out of the box standalone wireless device. And while the Oculus Rift and the PlayStation VR has been around for some time now, people have finally started investing in them on account of the great games that are available on VR platforms now. There is Beat Saber, Tetris Effect, Doom VFR, Superhot VR and Moss just to name a few VR games out of the handful that are already available.
And quality VR experience isn't just limited to desktops, consoles or video games either. Mobile VR headsets like the Samsung VR and Google Daydream are great jumping off points for anyone who wants to experience this technology for themselves.
Even in Bangladesh several marketing agencies tried to add the touch of VR in their campaigns. So far the reviews has been positive. Most said it added value while a few said that's just a gimmick they added to their portfolio. So far considering the local scene, VR is probably here to stay.
With more and more developers pledging to make games and applications for the platform, it has gone from being a wobbly proof of concept to becoming the gateway to the next generation.
