Classes and examinations at Jagannath University (JnU) have remained suspended for the second consecutive day following a student-led shutdown to press home their three-point demand.

Their demands include the transfer of the second campus project to the army for timely completion, the provision of temporary accommodation for students, and the arrangement of a housing allowance for at least 70 percent of students until temporary accommodation is available.

JnU students who had gone on a hunger strike to press home their demands called off their protest yesterday evening, 35 hours after authorities assured them of meeting two of their demands, but they announced a continuation of the boycott of classes and examinations.

Since the morning, no classes or exams have been held in any department of the university, said students.

AKM Rakib, a student of the Botany Department, announced that the shutdown would continue until their demands are met.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Hafizur Rahman, a computer operator at the Student Welfare Office, said, "The presence of students on campus is very low. Administrative operations are ongoing at a limited scale."

A notice issued by the education ministry yesterday provided assurances of accepting the first two demands at the meeting of the steering committee for the second JnU campus project to be held at the Secretariat tomorrow.
