Five students of Chittagong University went on hunger strike for an indefinite period, demanding the abolition of the "ward quota".

They are also demanding punishment for the people who were responsible for the killings during the July uprising.

The students on hunger strike are Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi of the Dramatics Department (2022-23 session), Rashid Dinar of the History Department (2019-20 session), Tanim Musfiq of the Islamic History Department (2019-20 session), Sairib Supto of the Law Department (2019-20 session), and Shuvo Hossain of the Bangla Department (2019-20 session).

They began their hunger strike at around 12:00 noon today in front of the university's administrative building, announcing that they would continue the programme until their demands are met.

Despite an offer from the university administration to hold talks, the students refused to negotiate.

They were seen chanting slogans, including "Sobaike Khobor Dao, Possho Quota Kobor Dao (Inform everyone, bury the ward quota)."

Talking to The Daily Star, one of the protesters, Khan Talat, said those who carried out attacks on students during the July uprising are still roaming freely on campus, yet the university administration has not taken any legal action.

"It is shameful that we are now on hunger strike for the same quota for which our brothers embraced martyrdom," he said.
