Loving Earth a little more
The annual World Earth Day is not meant to be celebrated just once a year. It would be wrong to assume that on World Earth Day, planting trees or cleaning up streets is enough. However, if you wish to gift a better and sustainable Earth to the future generation, here is a list of ideas that you could take up as habits, and we all know, every single effort counts:
1. Do not forget to switch off the stove once the cooking is done. It is not too wise to waste our natural resources like gas only to save a box of matches. It is also not logical.
2. Switch off those unused electronic appliances and light bulbs. Not only would that help you save money, it would also conserve energy. Additionally, you would have to face load shedding a little lesser than before. Who likes to sweat on hot summer days?
3. Train yourself and your children to use the dustbin and not throw litters on the road or parks. We know it's very hard to carry empty packets, with your phones, chargers, wallets taking up all the space. But a clean country promises a serene country. Moreover, you do not wish to get fined for littering and yes we have that!
4. Why not recycle plastic bottles, papers, and even old, unused electronic items? This is your chance to be creative and make the best out of discarded products.
5. Switch over to biodegradable bags whenever you shop. Say no to polythene bags as they ruin fertile lands if not disposed properly. They are also quite illegal.
6. Never waste water. Turn off your tap while you brush your teeth. Seriously, just turn it off.
7. Take the initiative to run a campaign in order to raise environmental awareness within your neighbourhood. Place around some dustbins. Keep it clean.
8. Send your car for maintenance check-up every year. It would help curb the emission of black smoke and not only save the ozone layer, but save you from being charged by the police.
9. If you can ride a cycle or walk to your destination, opt for either of it. Burn some calories while you are it. We all need to.
10. Be a responsible consumer. Say no to products whose manufacturing requires animal testing or attires made from animal fur. If firms exploit the environment, say no to them.
