Taking a Hiding
Seasonal rawhide traders are counting their losses due to a serious lack of demand. Visiting makeshift rawhide hubs in the capital’s Azimpur, Chawk Bazar, City College and New Market areas, the selling price of animal skin was found to be shockingly low. There were offers as low as Tk 10 for rawhide from goats and around Tk 200 for cowhide. The average highest price was around Tk 400. Many frustrated sellers around the country dumped their goods instead of selling it. Traders and merchants put the prices of the dumped rawhide at around Tk 100 crore. While traders were busy salting the hides, sellers were seen carrying their wares away having failed to make a sale. Some sellers said they had procured the hide for around Tk 700, but would now have to sell at almost half that price. Pictures were taken recently.
