4 get life for killing college student

A Dhaka court today sentenced four youths to life in jail for killing a college student of Madaripur Government Nazimuddin University College in March 2013.

Md Wahiduzzaman, a masters’ final year student of the college, was called out of his residence by a group of his friends and strangled at Singair Upazila in Manikganj district on March 6 of 2013.

The lifers are: Lenin Bepari, Shahbuddin Dorji, Rezaul Bepari and MM Faisal Ahmed. Of them, Rezaul was absent during the delivery of the judgment in the case.

Judge Md Monir Kamal of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of the three lifers.

The punishment of the fugitive will be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender and the judge fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve two months more in jail.

The tribunal acquitted Mohiuddin Dorji as his involvement with the killing was not proved.

Earlier the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 22 prosecution witnesses including complainant of the case.

Singair Police recovered Wahid’s body from a cornfield and filed a murder case with Singair Police Station.

Police then arrested four of the accused of which three gave confessional statements before magistrates on different dates.

After an investigation, detectives pressed charges against them on November 22 of 2014.
