6 hurt in BCL clashes at CU
At least six Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists were injured in a factional clash that ensued over establishing supremacy on the Chittagong University (CU) campus yesterday.
Three of them, including Sayan Das Gupta, former deputy entertainment affairs secretary of BCL CU unit and Tanjil Hridoy, were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said doctors of CU medical centre, while others received treatment from CU medical centre.
All of them were activists of currently dissolved unit of BCL in Chittagong University.
The clashes ensued after Md Saad, a follower of Late ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury slapped Tanjid, a follower of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, police said.
Following the incident, both groups equipped with sharp weapons took position in front of Shahjalal and Shah Amanat halls and hurled bricks at each other leaving six people injured, police said adding several chase and counter chase also occurred.
On information, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the clashing groups firing several rounds of tear gas shell to bring the situation under control.
Additional police have been deployed on the campus to avert untoward incident, police also said.
A commotion was prevailing on the campus after the incident, said Abdullah Al Masum, additional superintend of police of Hathazari circle.
Rezaul Haque Rubel, leader of Mohiuddin Chowdhury faction claimed that followers of AJM Nasir Uddin swopped on them.
“Our activists had only resisted them”, he claimed.
On the other hand, Alamgir Tipu, former president of CU unit BCL and a follower of AJM Nasir Uddin faction urged police and university authorities to take steps against the culprits.
No one was arrested in connection with the clash as of filing of this report at 7:20pm.
Litan Mitra, assistant proctor of CU said that they will not spare anyone who will try to create unrest on the campus.
“Necessary actions will be taken as per law after investigation”, he added.
