ACC summons DIG Mizan May 3
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday summoned Deputy Inspector General Mizanur Rahman, for quizzing him over amassing wealth illegally, among other corruption allegations.
In a letter sent to the Inspector General of Police, the anti-graft watchdog asked Mizanur to appear at its Segunbagicha office in the capital on May 3, said an ACC official seeking anonymity.
ACC's deputy director Farid Ahmed Patwary is probing the matter.
In its letter, ACC requested IGP to take necessary steps to ensure presence of Mizanur at its office on the stipulated date and time.
Mizan was withdrawn as the Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and attached to the Police Headquarters on January 10.
Mizan allegedly picked up 25-year-old Moriam Akter Eko from in front of her Panthapath house on July 15 last year and then forcibly married her, according to a statement of Moriam's mother Queen Talukdar.
In the statement sent to different media outlets, Queen Talukdar also alleged that her daughter was implicated in a false case and was jailed for three weeks. She got out of prison on bail a week ago.
Earlier in December last year, the same police official's name surfaced in the media for allegedly picking up a female news presenter of a private television channel at gunpoint.
On February 27, the investigation committee submitted a probe report on DIG Mizan to the Discipline and Professional Standard wing of Police Headquarters (PHQ).
Sources in the PHQ later said they found some of the allegations against him to be true.
This correspondent also obtained an audio record of the conversation between Mizan and the TV presenter.
In the audio record, the DIG threatened to kill the news presenter and a journalist who had “reported against him”. He said he would not spare those who were behind his downfall, and that he would take his own life after killing them.
Jamuna Television report mentioned that the phone conversation was recorded by detectives. The Daily Star could not independently verify the voices in the audio record. “We have quit our jobs as we cannot go out of our home for the last five months due to life threat...,” said the TV presenter to The Daily Star then.
The Daily Star tried to reach Mizan over two cellphone numbers he called to the TV presenter on different times, but found the phone switched off.
Contacted, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal suggested talking to DMP.
Soheli Ferdous, assistant inspector general (media) of police headquarters, said they were informed the matter through media. Police is investigating the matter.
