HC asks Comilla city mayor Shakoo to surrender
The High Court today directed the Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku to surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka in connection with a corruption case.
The HC, however, ordered the CMM court to grant bail to Sakku after his surrender in connection with the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim also issued a rule asking Monirul Haque Sakku and the government to explain why the lower court order exempting Sakku of the corruption case should not be scrapped.
The HC bench came up with the order and rule following a petition filed by the ACC challenging the legality of the lower court order.
ACC’s lawyer advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star that Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku has to surrender before the CMM court after receiving the HC order.
A Dhaka court on November 21 exempted Sakku from the corruption case, he said.
On Jan 7, 2008, the ACC filed the case against the CCC mayor and his wife with Ramna Police Station in Dhaka on charge of their involvement in amassing Tk 4.57 crore through illegal means and concealing information about wealth worth over Tk 1.12 crore from the commission.
