The High Court today imposed restrictions on parking all kinds of vehicles including rickshaws and private cars inside the premises of New Market, Dhaka for next six months.

The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why their inaction to restrain the parking of vehicles in the New Market should not be declared illegal.

The High Court bench of Justice Quazi Reza Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah came up with the order and rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Imtiaz Ahmed, a resident of Old Dhaka challenging the legality of parking vehicles in the New Market area.

Imtiaz, president of rights organization Shomaj er Proti Jubo Ruddho, submitted the petition to the High Court saying that people are suffering seriously due to the entrance of different vehicles in the New Market and parking those inside the market.

In the petition, he prayed to the court to pass necessary orders to reduce public suffering there.

The petitioner’s lawyer, Barrister ABM Altaf Hossain, told The Daily Star that no vehicle including private cars can enter the New Market and be parked there following the High Court order.
