Police today arrested the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) president of Government Bangla College, Mirpur in Dhaka for instigating the suicide of a female BCL leader.
Bangla College BCL President Zahid Mahmud was arrested and sent to Dhaka Central Jail through court, Sub-Inspector Krishna Roy of Kafrul Police Station told The Daily Star.
The victim was the student of the same institution and a leader of Kafrul thana unit Chhatra League, he added.
The law enforcers arrested Zahid from Kafrul Police Station around 12:15am when he went to the station allegedly to intercept the filing of a case against him for instigating the suicide.
Jewel Rana, uncle of the victim, said Zahid developed a physical relation with the girl promising to marry her. Later, he denied to marry her after she revealed that she became pregnant. Moreover, Zahid tried to abort the child forcibly, Jewel Rana added.
The girl then filed a general diary with the police station on June 1, which she later withdrawn upon pressure from Zahid.
Zahid had been issuing death threats to the girl’s family members after they created pressure on him to marry her.
Following continuous refusal, the girl attempted to commit suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling on June 13, and succumbed to her injuries on June 19 at a Mirpur hospital, Jewel Rana told The Daily Star.
