BIWTA scraps lease for Sadarghat launch terminal

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) today scrapped a lease for the Sadarghat launch terminal in Dhaka.

The move follows allegations of harassing passengers by the men of the lease holder and charging extra fare for using the terminal.

Talking to The Daily Star this evening, BIWTA Chairman Commodore Mohammad Mozammel Haque confirmed they received allegations of harassing passengers and collecting extra fare from passengers and making higher profit.

“We have cancelled the lease as we have found the allegations true,” said Haque adding that the BIWTA from now on will run the terminal itself to avoid harassment of the passengers.
