Brac university probe for registrar’s resignation
Terming the Brac University registrar’s action “unlawful”, a probe body formed by the university yesterday recommended his termination.
A five-member investigation committee was formed two days after to probe an incident of assault on Farhaan Uddin Ahmed, a lecturer of the law department of the university on July 30.

“He (Registrar Muhammad Sahool Afzal) should be reprimanded for the utterance of such an aggressive and provocative word against another individual. He thus committed unlawful restraint,” the probe report stated in a two-point recommendation.
As the Registrar had no legal authority to unlawfully restrain Ahmed against his will, the probe report recommends his resignation, it added.

The investigation committee submitted the report to the University Vice-chancellor Prof Syed Saad Andaleeb last evening, according to a university press release issued in this regard.
The committee also recommended that Farhan Uddin Ahmed’s termination/confirmation be resolved based solely on his academic research, teaching evaluation, service to university, community service, and self-development, and not by invoking clause 7 of the appointment letter and also not based on the PDC’s evaluation.
The five-member committee includes: Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, chairperson, Department of Mathematics & Natural Science, BRAC University, Prof Syed Manzoorul Islam, former chair , department of English, Dhaka University, Professor Afsan Chowdhury, department of English and Humanities, BRAC University, Tajdin Hassan, president, alumni Association, BRAC University and Maimuna Syed Ahmed, student representative, School of Law, BRAC University.
The university will take due actions as per the recommendations of the committee, the press note said.
Earlier, Farhaan, who joined the university as a lecturer in July last year, filed a complaint with Banani Police Station, accusing the three of assaulting him.
On his Facebook page, Farhaan also wrote he had been called to the registrar's office July 30 and then to the human resources department where he was handed a cheque and documents for immediate termination of his contract with the university.
He refused to accept the cheque and documents. As had submitted an official grievance application against the administration, he refused to accept the documents.
Protesting the incident, students took to streets for three consecutive days.
