Comilla University teacher’s leave withdrawn amid protest

The Comilla University authorities today withdrew its decision that sent a teacher on forced leave for a month for reportedly taking a class on National Mourning Day.

The decision came following the demand of the university teachers’ association and considering the emerged situation over the forced leave of Mahbubul Haque Bhuiyan, a lecturer and also the acting chairman of the department of mass media and communication, said a press release signed by the university registrar M Majibur Rahman Mazumder.

On August 17, the university authorities sent Mahbubul on a month's forced leave till September 19 next following demand of the university unit Chhatra League for “taking classes on the National Mourning Day”.

The university also formed a probe body to investigate the allegation.

Later, teachers of Comilla University Teachers Association and Bangabandhu Parishad staged demonstration on the campus protesting the university's decision to send the teacher on leave.

The students of mass communication and journalism department of Dhaka University also held protest programme on the campus protesting the forced leave order.

Besides, a legal notice was served to the vice chancellor and registrar of Comilla University yesterday by a lawyer, on behalf of the teacher, to withdraw the decision.
