DB inspector murder: ‘Key suspect’ killed in ‘gunfight’
A man suspected to be the key accused in killing DB inspector Md Jalal Uddin, was killed in a “gunfight” between his cohorts and detectives in Dhaka’s Mirpur area early today.
Mohammed Mokhlesur Rahman, deputy commissioner (west division) of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said, “The photograph of key suspect Hasan Ali has been matched with the deceased. But it will be confirmed after his family members identify the body”.
The “gunfight” took place around 2:30am in Bhangabridge area of Mirpur when a DB team rushed there on information that the killers of the DB official gathered in the area.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire at the DB members, forcing them to retaliate for self-defence, resulting in a “gunfight” that continued for a few moments.
After the “gunfight”, police found a bullet-hit man lying on the ground. He was declared dead after he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, DB official Mokhlesur said.
The other criminals fled away.
The law enforcers recovered two pistols of traffic sergeants that were stolen from their house recently and an illegal firearm, five bullets from the spot.
Md Jalal Uddin, an inspector of Detective Branch of DMP, was shot dead by armed criminals in the capital's Pirerbagh on March 20 during a DB raid to recover the stolen pistol. Police officials said it was Hasan who opened fire twice at the police officer on that day.
