The wife of a senior police official died of dengue fever at a hospital in Dhaka this morning.

Saiyada Akhtar, 54, wife of Shahabuddin Koraishi, additional inspector general of police (IGP), breathed her last at Square Hospitals around 11:30am, Sohel Rana, assistant IGP at police headquarters, told The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, at least nine dengue patients were detected in Lalmonirhat in last five days. Among the patients five of them went to home after treatment and rest are still under treatment at the Sadar Hospital, our correspondent reports today.

With this, a total of 52 people have died so far of dengue fever although the DGHS puts the death toll at 18.

A record 22,919 dengue cases have been reported since January this year, with 14,996 cases in July alone.

Of the cases, 4,905 were reported from outside Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In the 24 hours till 8:00am yesterday, 1,645 new cases were reported.
