Destiny boss gets 3yr jail for ‘hiding wealth’
Destiny director Md Mejbah Uddin Swapan has been handed three years’ rigorous jail in a case filed over not submitting wealth statement.
Judge Shahidul Islam of the Special Judge Court-7 also fined him Tk 20,000, in default of which he will have to suffer six months more in jail.
The punishment of the fugitive will be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender, the judge said after delivering the verdict in absentia of the convict.
According to the prosecution, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on April 03, 2016 served a notice asking Swapan to submit his wealth statement within seven days.
But allegedly the director did not receive it. Later the ACC hung the notice on the wall of Swapan’s Nikunja residence in the city’s Khilkhet area on April 10.
On June 28, 2016, ACC assistant director Mozammel Hossain filed the case against Swapan with Ramna Police Station as the Destiny director failed to comply with the ACC order within the stipulated time.
The ACC pressed charges against Swapan on March 16 last year and the court framed charges against the director on August 27, 2017.
