Banani Double Rape: Shafat's bail cancelled
A tribunal in Dhaka yesterday cancelled the November 29 bail order of Ahmed Shafat, prime accused in the Banani double rape case, and sent him to Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.
Judge Khademul Kayes of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 passed the order after Public Prosecutor of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court Abdullah Abu made submission on the petition, seeking cancellation of the bail.
During yesterday's hearing, Abu mentioned that Shafat got ad-interim bail on November 29 last year on health grounds. But he is quite well now. The defence failed to submit any medical certificates, he added.
“Moreover, if Shafat is on bail, he will tamper with witnesses of the case and can flee at any time. During the investigation, Shafat confessed to raping the victims. So his bail should be cancelled,”said Abu.
On the other hand, the defence counsel for Shafat, Kazi Nazibullah Hiru told the court that his client is still unwell.
After hearing both sides, the judge cancelled the bail and ordered to send him to jail.
The tribunal yesterday also rejected the bail of another accused Naim Ashraf, a friend of Shafat. Three other accused, Shafat's driver Billal Hossain and bodyguards Rahmat Ali and Shadman Sakif are now out on bail.
The tribunal fixed March 6 for the next hearing.
