Observing strikes at hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres to justify medical negligence during treatment is unethical, the High Court observed today.

It said that if the professions involving the police, doctors and lawyers are destroyed for the activities of some miscreants, citizens will suffer, the bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader said during hearing a rule.

Many people go to abroad for treatment due to medical inadequacy and negligence in the country and therefore, huge foreign currencies are spent, the court said referring to the recent incidents in Chittagong.

Irregularities plague Max Hospital in Ctg

Private clinics, hospitals and diagnostic centres in Chittagong went on a strike in response to mobile court drives of Rab in the port city's four hospitals on Sunday.

Earlier on June 29, Raifa Khan, daughter of a senior journalist in Chittagong, died of medical negligence at Max Hospital. Soon after the incident, there came demands for punishment of doctors whose negligence was proven in an investigation conducted by a three-member committee led by the Chittagong civil surgeon.

The High Court bench was holding hearing a rule issued over the incident of 20 people losing eyesight following surgeries at a health centre on March 5.

The bench asked the director general of the directorate of health services to submit a report before it by July 16 specifying the reasons for losing the eyesight of 20 people.

Twenty persons lost their eyes following surgeries at the Impact Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre (IMHMCHC) in Chuadanga on March 5 as the authorities did not adopt appropriate safety measures, according to a report published on Bangla daily Samakal on March 29.

Following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Amit Das Gupta, the HC on April 1 issued the rule asking the director and a physician of IMHMCHC in Chuadanga to explain why they should not be directed to give Tk 20 crore in compensation to 20 people who lost their eyesight.
