EC finds no proof of electoral code violation against Atiqul
The Election Commission did not find any proof against the allegation of violating electoral code of conduct by Awami League-backed mayoral aspirant Atiqul Islam to Dhaka North City Corporation election scheduled for January 30.
“Our investigation team did not find any authenticity of the allegation,” Abul Kashem, returning officer of the Dhaka North City corporation election, told The Daily Star.
The constitutional body yesterday issued a show-caused notice to Atiqul Islam based on the allegation of violating the electoral code of conduct.
The commission, in the show-cause notice, said Atiqul Islam along with a parliament member inaugurated an election campaign camp in Uttara area under his electoral area on January 5 which is a clear violation of the electoral code of conduct 2016.
The constitutional body also asked Atiqul to come up with a written answer within two working days as to why legal action will not be taken against him for violating the electoral code.
Earlier on Saturday, BNP-backed mayoral candidate Tabith Awal lodged a written complaint to the returning officers against Atiqul Islam for violating the electoral code of conduct.
The elections to Dhaka south and north city corporations will be held on January 30.
The last date for withdrawal of the candidacy is January 9.
