Evict illegal structures from Rupnagar canal: HC
The High Court today directed the authorities concerned of the government to evict all illegal constructions and encroachments of Rupnagar canal in Dhaka’s Mirpur area within a month.
The authorities have been ordered to carry out the eviction after demarcating the boundaries of the [Rupnagar] canal through conducting a joint survey, Deputy Attorney General Tapas Kumar Biswas told The Daly Star citing from the HC order.
During hearing a suo moto (voluntary) rule, the HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah also asked the government to submit a report to it after complying with its order by February 25.
The bench came up with the directive after examining the survey reports submitted by the offices concerned of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka.
The DNCC said in its report that there are some illegal structures in Rupnagar canal, although DC office said in its report that there is no illegal structure in the land of the same canal, DAG Tapas told The Daily Star.
Following a report published in the ProthomAloo under a headline “Rupnagar Khal Nie Kutsit Karmokando" (Dirty activities involving Rupnagar canal), the same HC bench in October last year issued the suo moto rule and asked the authorities to stop the activities which damage the pumping out of water from Rupnagar canal and to submit a report to this effect before this court.
