'Extortion by cops': ACC conducts drive in Adamjee EPZ
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) led a drive today at Adamjee Export Processing Zone (EPZ) to investigate the allegations against the local police of carrying out extortion from sand-laden bulkheads on Shitalakkhya River.
However, the three-member ACC team reportedly did not find the presence of local police during the three-hour long drive in the area.
A report was submitted to the Director General (DG) of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Md Munir Chowdhury in this regard.
Meanwhile, Abdul Sattar Miah, officer-in-charge of Siddhirganj Police Station, denied the allegations against police, Md Munir told The Daily Star.
"But there might have been incidents of collecting Tk 50 to Tk 100 from trawlers by a police patrol team," he said referring to the report.
“The OC assured of taking action and remaining alert to prevent such incidents in future” the DG also said.
ACC will strengthen its surveillance to stop extortion and culprits will be brought under the law, the ACC official added.
