Samajtantrik Mohila Forum, a left-leaning women's organisation, today staged a protest rally in Dhaka demanding justice to Sonagazi madrasa student, who was set afire four days ago.

The leaders and activists of the platform also formed a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club this afternoon protesting the brutality on the Alim examinee.

The 18-year-old girl is currently on life support at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Addressing the rally, speakers demanded phenomenal punishment to those involved with the egregious crime, said a release of the platform.

They also voiced grave concerns over the reported increase of violence against the women across the country.

They blamed the “culture of impunity” behind the sharp increase in violence against women and children.

The madrasa student was set on fire on April 6 allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against Maulana Siraj Ud Doula, principal of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa for sexually harassing her late last month.

Sonagazi police picked up Siraj on the same day as the case was filed on March 27. Three suspects including the main suspect Siraj were placed on remand by a Feni court today.
