Gonojagaran Mancha protests attack on Zafar Iqbal

Gonojagaran Mancha today protested the attack on eminent educationist Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal.

Demanding swift probe into the incident and a trace on the plotters of the attack, the activists of the Mancha demonstrated at Dhaka’s prime point Shahbagh this afternoon.

Imran H Sarker, leader of the Mancha group, led the demonstration that took place a day after the attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust).

A bearded youth stabbed Prof Zafar Iqbal on the head from the rear yesterday, while he was attending a robotic competition at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) campus in Sylhet. The professor is said to be now out of danger.

“The state cannot avoid its responsibility,” rights activist Sultana Kamal said at the demonstration. “An attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal is an attack on the spirit of Liberation War”.

Shaheen Anam, executive director for Manusher Jonno Foundation, said: “We are with the family. We will stand beside the family until the culprits are brought to justice.”

Imran H Sarker, spokesperson for the Mancha, blamed fundamental quarters for the attack. “He was attacked because of his stand against fundamentalism and for secularism”.
