Guppy fish to be released in Dhaka south to curb mosquito-borne diseases
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will release Guppy fishes in drainage and sewerage lines to curb the menace of mosquito-borne diseases including Chikungunya.
“We are going to release Guppy fishes in 450 kilometer drainage and sewerage lines in my electoral area immediately to curb the reproduction of mosquito,” DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon said at a programme this afternoon.
Citing reason for such initiative, Khokon said a guppy fish is able to eat at least 50 mosquito larvae everyday and help to slow the spread of malaria.
Claiming that the outbreak of Chikungunya has been brought under control, Khokon called upon all councillors to continue the guppy fish project in the city corporation area for people’s interest.
He also underscored the need for mass awareness against the menace of Chukungunya and dengue diseases.
Around 1,577 people who were affected from Chikungunya have been given treatment visiting houses at different parts in the area alongside creating awareness against such epidemic, he added.
