HC ask to hold Viqarunnisa governing body polls by May 27
The High Court today directed the authorities concerned to hold the elections to the governing body of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College by May 27.
The court came up with the verdict following a writ petition, which said the tenure of the governing body of the institution expired on August 29, 2010.
Three adhoc committees and a special committee of the governing body were formed for running the institution but those have not held elections to a regular committee of the governing body, petitioner Eunus Ali Akond, also a Supreme Court lawyer, claimed.
As per relevant rule, the adhoc committee is supposed to make a regular committee of the governing body for holding the elections within a month from its formation. But the adhoc and special committees have failed to hold the polls, which is a violation of the rule, the petitioner said.
Earlier on December 9 last year, the HC issued a rule upon the authorities concerned of the government and the Viquarunnisa Noon School and College to explain why the adhoc committee of the institution should not be declared illegal.
After holding hearing on the rule, the High Court bench of Justice Zinat Ara and Justice Md Habibul Gani delivered the verdict today.
Akond told the Daily Star that the authorities concerned of the government and the institution have to hold the governing body polls by May 27 as the present adhoc committee’s tenure will expire on that day.
The existing adhoc committee headed by Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon formed on November 27 last year.
