HC verdict on April 11
The High Court yesterday fixed April 11 for delivering verdict on the death reference and appeals in the sensational 13-year-old Sheikh Md Samiul Alam Rajon killing case.
The HC bench of Justice Zahangir Hossain and Justice Zahangir Hossain set the date after concluding hearing arguments from the counsels on the death reference and appeals.
On July 8, 2015, Rajon was beaten to death by a group of brutes in Kumargaon Bus Stand area of Sylhet Sadar allegedly for trying to steal a rickshaw van.
One of them even filmed the horrendous incident and shared it on Facebook.
The 28-minute video footage went viral in social media and shows prime accused Quamrul Islam hitting the boy with a stick in the feet, joints of legs, shoulders and head.
A Sylhet court in November 2015 sentenced four people including Quamrul to death for killing Rajon.
Three other death-row convicts are Zakir Hossain alias Pavel, Saddique Ahmed alias Boro Moyna and Taz Uddin alias Badal.
The convicts later filed appeals with the HC challenging the trial court verdict.
Meanwhile yesterday, the same HC bench started hearing on the death reference and appeals in a case filed against Oishee Rahman over killing her father -- police official Mahfuzur Rahman -- and her mother in 2013.
The bench also fixed toady for resuming the hearing, Assistant Attorney General Atiqul Haque Salim told The Daily Star.
On August 16, 2013, the bodies of Mahfuzur, inspector of Special Branch of Police, and his wife Swapna Rahman were recovered from their Chamelibagh house in the capital.
A Dhaka court on November 12, 2015 sentenced Oishee to death for the killing.
Oishee later filed an appeal with the HC challenging the lower court verdict.
