Tofa, Tahura regain consciousness after separation

The conjoined twins from Gaibandha -- Tofa and Tahura – have been separated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The twins, joined at the waist, were separated around 2:15pm and the surgery was completed around 2:30pm, Ashraf-ul-Huq Kazal, head of Paediatric Surgery Department at the DMCH, told The Daily Star.

They regained their consciousness around 3:30pm, the doctor also said, adding that they were hopeful that the surgery was successful. 

The twins have been kept under special arrangements, the doctor added. 

Daughters of Shahida and Raju Mia from Gaibandha, the twins were believed to have been suffering from a medical condition called 'Pygopagus' in which two individuals are joined at the buttocks.

A 30-member medical team of DMCH comprised of doctors from different departments including anesthesia, burn and plastic surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology and radiology operated on the children.

The twins, now 10-month-old, grew up together.

They were joined from back to below their waist and shared one anus.

This would be the first time ever in the history of pediatric surgery in the country in which a pair of 'Pygopagus' twins will be separated, pediatric surgeons of DMCH said.
