JnU journos give 24-hr ultimatum for expulsion of attackers
The campus reporters of Jagannath University today gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities demanding expulsion of those responsible for the attack on two of their fellows during yesterday’s clashes between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
If the authorities do not meet their demand, they would go for tougher agitation programmes, Fakhrul Islam Shahin, campus reporters of online news portal bdnews24.
Around 50 journalists formed a human chain on the campus from where they announced the ultimatum around noon.
They also demanded the Jagannath University authorities to ensure journalists can continue to work freely and independently on the campus.
University reporters Latiful Islam of the Samakal and Rakibul Islam Rakib of the Sangbad were beaten up by the “president-secretary group” of BCL as they tried to take pictures of the clash.
The clash started around noon yesterday afternoon. Armed with iron rods, sharp weapons and sticks, around 250 BCL men, mostly wearing helmets, swooped on each other. The pitched battle continued until police intervened around 10 minutes later, witnesses said. The clashes left 39 people injured in the incident.
