Man killed in Shyamoli gunfight: Rab
A man was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members in Dhaka's Shyamoli area early today.
The deceased was identified as Shahin Bishwas, alias Hanif Mia, 48, Mohammad Mohiuddin Faruqui, company commander of Rab-2, told The Daily Star.
Hanif was the son of late Buidda Mistri of Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj.
Faruqui said a Rab team set up a temporary check post in front of National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology in Shyamoli around 11:00pm last night to search suspicious cars, auto-rickshaws and motorcycles.
Around 12:15am, members of the elite force stopped a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and three passengers got down. However, another passenger refused to exit the vehicle.
The three passengers suddenly fired blank shots and tried to flee by crossing the boundary wall of National Institute of Mental Health and Hospital.
The miscreants also opened fire on the Rab team and the other passenger sitting inside the auto-rickshaw. The law enforcers retaliated, triggering the "gunfight".
Hanif was caught in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries, while the others managed to flee the scene.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, added the Rab official.
The Rab team recovered a foreign-made pistol, six rounds of bullets and the CNG-run auto-rickshaw from the spot.
