Armed Police Battalion (APBn) detained three people today for smuggling 2,600 pieces mobile phone sets into the country through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The detainees are Md Sujon, 49, from Faridpur; Shahriar Hossain Prince, 33, from Demra of Dhaka; and Md Rofiqul Islam, 27, from Mymensingh, Alamgir Hossain Shimul, additional superintendent (ops and media) of APBn told The Daily Star.

They were detained from the canopy area of the airport around 8:00am after they arrived in the country from China by a US-Bangla Airlines flight, he said.

The mobile phones recovered from their baggage are worth Tk3.5 crore, he further said.

In primary interrogation, they confessed that the mobile phones were brought for selling in Bangladesh and India and Sujon have been involved in smuggling for the past 25 years, he said.

APBn is preparing to file a case against them, he added.
