3 killed in nor’wester in Dhaka
At least three people were killed and 22 others were injured in Dhaka during a nor’wester that struck this evening.
A man was killed and at least 22 others were injured at national mosque Baitul Mukarram after the nor’wester struck post iftar this evening.
The nor’wester crashed a temporary pandal, which collapsed on praying Muslims under it and on pedestrians around 7:00pm during the storm.
Shiblee Noman, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Motijheel zone), confirmed The Daily Star of one casualty.
Bachchu Mia, inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, told The Daily Star the deceased has been identified as Shafikul Islam, 40.
About 22 victims have been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
According to what could be known, deceased Shafikul Ilsam had iftar under the pandal and was praying to God when the nor’wester struck.
In North Badda, two people were killed in a wall collapse, Abdur Razzak, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Badda Police Station told The Daily Star.
They were declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The victims could not be identified as of writing this report at 9:30pm.
According to Met Office, the storm raged with wind speeds of up to 65 kmph and was accompanied by 23mm of rainfall in the capital.
