10 get jail for catching wild birds for sale in Dhaka
A mobile court today sent 10 people to jail for different terms for catching wild birds with net and selling them in Abdullahpur area of Dhaka.
Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam of Rab-1 passed the order after the 10 people were caught red-handed during a drive at Tongi Bridge area of Abdullahpur around 11:00am this morning.
The arrestees were handed one month to six months' jail term for the offence, Sarwoer Alam told The Daily Star.
The drive was conducted jointly by Rab-1 and a team of forest department on preventing crimes against wildlife.
A total of 469 birds of seven different local endangered species were seized from the arrestees, around 10 of which died while the rest were released to the wild, the executive magistrate said.
Meanwhile, two persons were handed one-year jail term for producing poultry feed with leather wastes from tanneries which were treated with toxic chemicals.
Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam passed the order during a joint drive conducted by Rab-1 and livestock department in Boubazar area of Hazaribagh in Dhaka around 2:30pm this noon.
A total of 42 tonnes of the toxic poultry feed was also seized during the drive, Sarwoer Alam told The Daily Star.
Consuming poultry products, which were fed such toxic feed, might lead to kidney complications and cancer in human, he also said.
The law enforcers are looking for others involved in the racket behind producing such adulterated poultry feed, he added.
