16-Point Demand: Buet students announce class, exam boycott

The deadline set by students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to fulfill their 16-point demand was over yesterday, with their demands remaining unmet.

In response, the students announced to continue their agitation and boycott all classes and examinations till their demands are met.

Around 300 students from different departments of the university yesterday staged a sit-in programme in front of vice-chancellor’s office from 10am.

The agitating students stayed there for four hours, but could not meet the VC as he did not attend office.

The students have been demonstrating since Saturday to realise their demands, including formation of a special committee comprising teachers of civil engineering and architecture departments to build the Buet gate, introducing teacher evaluation system, digitalising students’ payment process and increasing allocation in research sector.

Anis Rahman, a coordinator of the movement, said, “We have been demonstrating for three days, but the VC did not meet us even once.”

The VC told a teacher to tell the students to “pray” to get their demands fulfilled, Anis also alleged.

“Three teachers came to us and said our demands are logical but did not assure us to fulfill those. They asked us to resume academic activities, but we would continue our agitation.”
