2 cops withdrawn for ‘assisting in extortion’

Two assistant sub-inspectors have been withdrawn for allegedly assisting a man in extortion in Narayanganj.

Both Aminul and Anwar, assistant sub-inspectors of Bandar Police Station, were withdrawn today, our local correspondent reports.

A man, who was known as police source, was arrested over allegation of extorting people in the district’s Bandar upazila.

The arrestee, Md Shamim, 30, allegedly introduced himself as a magistrate and extorted money from shopkeepers in Sabdi area on the bank of Brahmaputra river during Eid, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bandar Police Station.

A case was filed with the police station today, OC Rafiqul also said.

Steps will be taken against ASI Aminul and ASI Anwar following departmental probe, he added.
