The president of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College’s governing body, today apologised over the suicide of a ninth-grader of the school, Aritry Adhikary.

The governing body is shocked and are apologising to Aritry’s parents, Golam Ashraf Talukdar said at a press briefing inside the school premises.

If necessary, members of the governing body will resign for the sake of the institution and its students, he said.

"We are aware of their (students) demands,” Golam Ashraf Talukdar, president of the governing body, said at a press briefing inside the school premises.

“If anyone from the governing body wants to resign now, they can. I will convey the message among the governing body members in our meeting,” he said.

About the postponement of the examinations, the governing body president said the students will have to sit for their exams and the governing body will decide what to do if the students refuse it.

The students have been demanding resignation of the governing body members after the suicide of Aritry.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ARITRY ADHIKARY?

Aritry Adhikary, a ninth grader, was found hanging from the ceiling of her home in the capital's Shantinagar on Monday (December 3) hours after she and her parents were allegedly insulted by some teachers of the school.

The death and the subsequent agitation, joined by parents, rocked the 66-year-old institute and prompted the education ministry and the school authorities to form two separate probe committees.

WHEN WAS THE TEACHER ARRESTED?

Viqarunnisa Noon School and College yesterday suspended its under-fire acting principal Nazneen Ferdous, morning shift in-charge Zinat Akhtar, and class teacher Hasna Hena over the suicide of ninth-grader Aritry Adhikary.

Last night, the Detective Branch of police arrested Hasna Hena in a case filed in connection with instigating the suicide.

Hasna Hena has been taken to court today.

FAMILY SHATTERED

Holding the certificates of his daughter close to his chest, Dilip cried the entire time while talking to this correspondent.

"My daughter knew seven different languages and got an award from British Council  as best book reader,” he said, adding Aritry had secured GPA-5 in her  Primary Education Completion Examination and Junior School Certificate examinations in 2014 and 2017.
